Kathleen is the principal of her ballet school in South Shields and has been teaching classical ballet for over 50 years. Trained by Miss Nora Lycette Fearn, Kathleen Burdon qualified as a Registered Teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance and opened her own ballet school, teaching the RAD syllabus to children and young adults for graded and vocational examinations.
Many of her pupils have successfully auditioned for Vocational Schools including The Royal Ballet School, Bush Davies School, Arts Educational School, English National Ballet School, Central Ballet School, London Studio Centre, Elmhust, Laine Theatre Arts and Doreen Bird. Many have gone on to dance professionally both in this country and abroad.
Past performances by pupils and students of her school have included full length versions of Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Giselle and Nutcracker - all of which were very successful.
The Kathleen Burdon School of Ballet has also given many pupils the opportunity to perform on stage alongside ballet companies, such as the European Ballet, and the chance to attend workshops and classes taught by top ballet professionals, including Wayne Sleep!
In 2001, Rebecca left the school to study for a degree at the University of Northumbria, continuing with ballet classes at Dance City during this time. In 2004, she returned to Kathleen Burdon and successfully passed Grade 8 -the last examination of the graded syllabus.
Rebecca has also recently successfully passed her Advanced One examination and is now working towards completing the last examination of the vocational syllabus -Advanced Two.
Now, aged 29, Rebecca is enrolled with the Royal Academy of Dance on a two year long-distance learning course to become a qualified ballet teacher in 2012. As well as working full-time, Rebecca assists Kathleen Burdon at classes to develop her knowledge and experience ready for her career as a ballet teacher.
Rebecca has danced with the Kathleen Burdon School of Ballet since the age of 6 and has progressed through the syllabus. Over the years, she has taken part in a number of workshops and classes taught by professional and experienced dancers -winning a place for one master class following a successful audition at the North East Scholarship Awards.
Dancing on stage with the school, Rebecca has taken on the roles of Princess Florina and the Fairy of the Woodland Glade in Sleeping Beauty and most recently as Giselle, following which she was awarded the Gordon Fraser Dance Award by Kathleen Burdon for her performance.
